Learning at the beautiful rice field

Thai farmers are backbone of the country. Rice is not only the staple food of the country, but now it is one of our main export products. Therefore, farmers are the most important work force of the country.

Farmers work from dawn to dusk the whole year-round as after the annual rice harvest, they will again cultivate the second-rice crop or other cash crops, raising cattle and other animals such as fish, ducks etc. Usually fish lives by nature in the paddy fields. So, rice and fish will naturally grow up in the same place. At the end of the annual rice harvest, farmers will have both rice and fish to eat during the coming dry season. Thus, it has become a common greeting among Thai people when they meet, they will firstly ask each other “Where do you go?” then the following sentence is “Did you eat rice and fish ?”. In fact, rice and fish have been the main food of Thai people for a very long time.

Unfortunately, a lot of risk factors of tropical disease usually involve the life style of the farmers such as they like to eat unripe food that is the risk of parasitic infection and don’t wear boots during work in the rice field. It’s a risk of leptospirosis and melioidosis.

Learned the process to produce Thai Silk

Silk is the natural filament produced by the salivary glands of silkworms which are a type of moth that feeds on the mulberry bush. Silkworms are caterpillars, not worms. They spin their cocoons using a complex set of mechanisms within their bodies when they change from larva into pupa. Thai silk is produced by Thai caterpillars raised on Thai mulberry leaves by Thai weavers in Thailand.

Raw silk is bumpy and irregular. The completed cocoon is pulled from the mulberry bush and placed in a vat of boiling water, which separates the silk thread of the cocoon from the caterpillar inside.
The silk from Thailand’s caterpillars varies in color from light gold to very light green. A cocoon is comprised of one thread that is 500-1,500 meters long. A single filament is too thin to use alone so many threads are combined to make a thicker, more practical fiber.

Our weavers wash these raw silk threads, bleach them, then soak them in vats of hot dyes. Afterwards, they wash the silk thread again, stretch it, and put it through a final dying process. When that is finished, they wind the threads onto spools or drums in preparation for weaving using

Both medical and cultural….

Experience Thailand’s Community Hospital System

And Esarn Culture!

GOODBYE…

“Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

When I heard from Dr. Sathaporn that I will be accepted for a medical elective at Nachueak Hospital,
I was very excited in two ways:
Looking very forward to get to know a community hospital and the people there, in a part of Thailand that the tourists usually never visit,

But I was also a “little” bit nervous:
Adventure! I did not know what to expect!

What I experienced here within two weeks exceeded all my expectations:

I have never ever learnt such a warm welcome and acceptance from all of you and
thanks to Dr. Sathaporn and the medical staff I
have gained more clinical experience in all kind of fields!

It was very exciting for me to see the management at a community hospital, to visit the patients in the communities, to be part of your hospital team

I appreciate it highly that I was introduced into your ‘Esarn’ culture and language,
and that you arranged so many visits and possibilities for me to get to know
The Esarn ‘Easy lifestyle’ including the
ahaan saep!

The experiences here in NaChueak-
I will always keep in my heart

I want to thank you so much for everything,
Dr. Piti for allowing me to come to his hospital and his delicious dinner invitations,

Dr. Doi for all his efforts to teach me in medicine and culture and ! exercise!, translating and guiding me around Nachueak and beyond, thank you for your wonderful website! Many compliments from my family and friends!

Dr. Mameow for allowing me to be her ‘housemate’ and watching her favourite thai
series with her,

Dr. Thaksinar for her wonderful Egypt calendar,

Dr. Po for arranging the delicious farewell lunch,

The teams of ER, IPD, OPD, PCU, LABOUR Room, ID, and all the medical staff for being so helpful and patient with my medical procedures, my medical English( I know I can not speak ‘Tenglish’!) for translating, and for being always very funny….!

Many thanks to the IT Team, who made me able to reconnect with the rest of the world!

Thank you all so much!

I hope I could give you a little back of the cordiality that you present me-
And I would be really very happy to welcome you one day in Germany ( but please not all at the same time!) and Miss Katie and Pi Pai:
I will find you a rich German husband!

I came as a ‘Falang’ and still: I will leave as a Falang, but as a ‘Falang puang’
